Focus On: Grants
So many grants go to the big shelters who have vast support, volunteers who are invested in their success, perhaps even a grant-writer on staff. These are deserving shelters who save a lot of dogs. But many of the shelters we visit are small, municipal shelters, or they are struggling local rescues who pull dogs from county dog pounds or save dogs where there is no municipal shelter. They are stretched thin financially, but even thinner in terms of volunteers and resources. Many don’t have time to research or write grants, even with our help, too often its beyond their scope of abilities. They are too busy saving lives.
That’s why we created ‘insta-grants’. We give these grants of resources to deserving shelters, places where $500-$2500 could make a real difference. These aren’t big gifts of money, instead our Instagrant coordinator works directly with the shelter to purchase items that can make a real difference in their work saving lives. We call these grants instant, because there is no long application process. We see a need, we help immediately. A few of the projects, we’ve funded include:
- Pour concrete for new kennels to get dogs off the dirt ($2000).
- Purchase commercial washer and dryer so that shelter could offer bedding to their dogs ($1800).
- Purchase a professional quality animal scale so shelter can give potential rescue partners accurate weights (and medicate/deworm their dogs with the correct dose for their weight) ($450).
- Purchase shelter quality karunda beds to get dogs off the cement floors. ($1800)
- Purchase new kennels to replace worn kennels or to get dogs out of crates in places that are beyond capacity.
These small grants available to the shelters and rescues we visit are made possible thanks to the generosity of our donors and a grant-to-regrant from the ASPCA. The more we have, the more we give.

The Difference Between City and County Shelters in Arkansas
Before I tell you about CCAPS - Animal Shelter, Magnolia, AR, I need to first explain something unique to Arkansas. Cities have municipal shelters funded by tax money, and county shelters do not have municipal shelters. Instead, they depend on private nonprofit shelters and rescue organizations like CCAPS (and UCAPS). There is little regulation of these private shelters and rescues, …

A Note From Our Grants Advisor:
Since the theme of this month’s newsletter is grants, this is an ideal opportunity to remind all our partners that WWLDO offers grants guidance! Please consider reaching out to WWLDO grants advisor, Nicole (nicolemiasandler@gmail.com), if you’d like to chat about the many grants opportunities listed in the WWLDO Resource Guide or simply how to apply for grants.
We understand that many of our shelter partners don’t have the capacity or resources to devote to grant writing. However, we’d like to offer one solution to that challenge: how about reaching out to your network of supporters to identify someone willing to work on grant applications in a volunteer capacity? The volunteer doesn’t even need to live anywhere near your shelter. The only prerequisites of a volunteer grant writer are (1) writing experience; (2) good organizational skills; and (3) commitment to the work you do.
We can vouch that this approach of partnering with a volunteer grant writer CAN prove successful in securing grant funding for your shelter!
Meanwhile, please continue to review the Grants section of the Resource Guide for updated application cycle dates. If you learn of a grant opportunity not already listed, we’d welcome hearing from you so we can it share it with everyone. Last of all, note that some of the bigger grant opportunities (Petco Love and Pedigree Foundation) have grant cycles currently open or opening soon. Or, consider some of these smaller grant opportunities that are open year-round: Banfield Foundation, Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, Onyx & Breezy Foundation. We hope to hear from you, and good luck!

Call for Donations: Items for Fall Auction!
Although our fall auction may seem far away, as our biggest event of the year its imperative that we plan far in advance to ensure its success. We are already recruiting donors for our auction and are especially in need of items that don't require shipping like services, etc. and things that are easy to mail anywhere in the US like gift certificates.
Do you have items you could offer to auction? Please email Lindsay Kohr at lkohr049@gmail.com.

Learn Everything You Need to Know About Grants in the WWLDO Resource Guide
The WWLDO Resource Guide has a section dedicated to Grants. This page is a detailed how-to offering everything from help with understanding the grant process to what to consider before applying for a particular grant. Under the 2024 Grant Opportunities section, visitors can browse through lists of grants broken down by those that require a simple application process and those needing more advanced planning before applying.
In addition to the Grants page, the Resource Guide’s Fundraising section features a list of organizations and businesses with ongoing nonprofit programs that benefit animal shelters. For example, the Chewy Network has donated more than 80 million pounds of food to animal shelters nationwide, and the Jersey Mike’s Subs franchise has raised more than 88 million for charities including animal shelters. The Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter, WV was chosen as the local Jersey Mike’s Subs nonprofit partner in March. In addition to raising funds for the shelter, the restaurant raised awareness about the wonderful work being done at the shelter and the importance of adopting homeless animals.

Would you like to win 5 Kuranda Beds for your Organization?
Each month, photos of dogs in their forever homes on Kuranda Beds compete in our Dog of the Month Contest. Each photo is representing a shelter or rescue who will receive 5 Kuranda Beds if the photo wins.
Some contest participants choose to represent specific groups but many want us to pick an organization that is in need of beds.
(Organizations do not need to provide a photo to participate in a contest).
Each contest runs from the first of the month through the 15th and votes may be cast daily.
Don't want to wait for a contest to get some new Kuranda Beds?
